IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa volleyball team defeated Ball State, 3-0, Saturday morning in the Hawkeye-Holiday Inn Challenge. Iowa improved its record to 7-3 overall with the win.

Junior Catherine Smale returned to the Iowa lineup after missing the last eight games with an injury and had seven kills along with six digs. Sophomore Megan Schipper led the team with eight kills. Junior Kiley Fister added 27 assists while junior Laura Kremer had two solo blocks and two block assists.

Iowa used a 9-4 run to take an 18-11 lead in game one and never trailed, extending its lead to 25-18 later in the game. The Hawkeyes used kills from freshmen Aimee Huffman and Katie Kennedy to wrap up game one, 30-23.

Ball State took a 24-19 lead in game two, but a 7-2 Hawkeye run tied the match at 26-26. Smale served the final four points of the game for a 30-26 comeback win in game two.

Game three saw nine ties, the last of which came at 27-27. Two Ball State attack errors gave Iowa a 29-27 lead and redshirt freshman Becky Walters gave Iowa the win with a kill at 30-28.

Iowa returns to action Saturday night against the College of Charleston at 7 p.m. in the final game of the Hawkeye-Holiday Inn Challenge.
