MINNEAPOLIS, MN – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team finished day one and day two at the ITA Midwest Regional in Minneapolis, MN. The Hawkeyes claimed four singles matches and two doubles matches at the Baseline Tennis Center. The singles finalists and doubles champion will earn berths to compete in the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships beginning November 1.
Sophomore Reinoud Haal advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Alejandro Calligari of Louisville 6-4, 6-3 in the round of 16. Haal defeated Derek Peterson of Minnesota 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 in the round of 64 and defeated Sebastian Lystad of Illinois-Chicago 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the round of 32. Sophomore Tommy McGeorge advanced to the round of 32 after defeating Ra’ess Ismail of Xavier 6-1, 6-3 before falling to Nick Boulieris of Marquette 6-4, 6-7, 6-4. Additionally, Patrick Dwyer was defeated by Chris Madden of Michigan 6-4, 6-4 in the opening round.
In doubles play, the Hawkeyes claimed two matches on Friday. Sophomores Patrick Dwyer and Reinoud Haal defeated Camacho/Maksimcuk of Louisville 8-4 and seniors J. P. Ritchie and Bart van Monsjou got by Deirberger/Marrack of Wisconsin 8-6 in the round of 64. In addition, Greg Holm and Walker Grimes fell to Davis/Knue of Illinois 8-4 and Christian Bierich and Tommy McGeorge lost to Jung/Scroczynski of Michigan 8-6 in the opening round of 64.
Competition at the ITA Regional will continue over the weekend with play concluding Monday.
