MINNEAPOLIS, MN – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team finished day three at the ITA Midwest Regional in Minneapolis, MN. The Hawkeyes claimed four singles matches and two doubles matches Saturday at the Baseline Tennis Center. The singles finalists and doubles champion will earn berths to compete in the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships beginning November 1.
Senior Bart van Monsjou led the Hawkeyes in open singles competition. Van Monsjou defeated Eduardo Pavia of Ball State 6-1, 7-6 in the round of 64 before overwhelming Tyler Davis of Notre Dame 6-0, 6-0 to advance to the round of 16. Reinoud Haal advanced to the round of 32 by defeating Brendon Davis of Illinois 7-6, 7-5 before falling to Indiana’s Thomas Richter 5-7, 7-5, 6-3. Additionally in the round of 64, senior J.P. Ritchie got by Jose Perdomo of Ball State 6-4, 6-3 before falling to Sherra Parbhu of Notre Dame 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Junior Christian Bierich battled Purdue’s Branko Kuzmanovic before falling 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
In doubles play, seniors J.P. Ritchie and Bart van Monsjou claimed two doubles victories on Saturday. Ritchie/van Monjou defeated Allare/Forger of Michigan State 8-6 in the round of 32 before overpowering Kuzmanovic/Rose of Purdue 8-1 in the round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinals. In addition, sophomores Patrick Dwyer and Reinoud Haal were defeated by Baumann/Polley of Wisconsin 8-2 in the round of 32.
Competition will resume on Sunday with play concluding Monday.
