ANN ARBOR, MI – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team finished day three at the Big Ten Singles Championship in Ann Arbor, MI. The round of 16 and quarterfinal matches of the 64-player main draw were completed Sunday at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Senior Bart van Monsjou led the Hawkeyes on Sunday. Seventh-seeded van Monsjou advanced to the semifinals of the main draw with two more victories. Van Monsjou overpowered A. Forger of Michigan State 6-0, 6-4 in the round of 16 before defeating fourth-seeded M. Sroczynski of Michigan 6-0, 7-5 in the quarterfinals. The semifinals and the finals of the main draw will be completed Monday. Van Monsjou will face Wisconsin’s N. Polley in the semifinals. In addition, Reinoud Haal advanced to the semifinals of the consolation bracket and J.P. Ritchie advanced to the quarterfinals.
Head Coach Steve Houghton was pleased with the Hawkeyes performance. “We have had a great tournament to cap-off a great fall season. Bart (van Monsjou) has had a great tournament and is capable of winning the tournament tomorrow.”
Competition at the Big Ten Singles will conclude Monday.
