Barta: Thanks Seniors, Hawkeyes, Fans

Nov. 16, 2007

Saturday is Senior Day and Fan Appreciation Day at historic Kinnick Stadium. There’s no question that both of these groups deserve a hearty “thank you” from everyone who cheers for the black and gold on Saturday afternoons

The senior class of the 2007 Iowa football team has distinguished itself on and off the playing field. Kirk has told us each week that this group kept their teammates “on task” and “focused.” Collectively and individually, they assumed responsibility and accountability not only for themselves, but for their team as well. Each are personal characteristics of people who win football games and are successful in the game of life.

I want to take this opportunity to also acknowledge every member of the football program – our coaches, our football support staff, and all of our football student-athletes – for their perseverance and determination. Today, our football team stands bowl eligible for the seventh consecutive season thanks in great measure to their ability to work through a myriad of challenges and still find a way to compete successfully. Once again, they’ve made all of us proud to be Iowa Hawkeyes.

With respect to our fans, what can I say that hasn’t already been said? They – you – are simply the best….30 consecutive sellouts of historic Kinnick Stadium is numerical evidence of your loyalty and support. We stand ready to extend our season by one more game in part because our bowl partners know fans of the Iowa Hawkeyes will be loud, will be proud, and will support their team.

So, again, on behalf of everyone involved in our intercollegiate athletics program, thank you for your support of the Hawkeyes. We can’t say it too often: We appreciate your support and we never take it for granted.

Go Hawks!
