KIRKSVILLE, MO – The University of Iowa men and women’s swimming team was in Kirksville, MO on Friday to take on the Truman State Bulldogs. The men’s team came away with a win over the NCAA Division II 13th ranked squad by a final score of 187-75. The women also won, 139-123, over the 9th ranked team. The wins improve the men’s record to 2-3 (1-3 Big Ten) and the women’s record to 2-4 (1-2 Big Ten).
The men’s team surrendered only three individual victories to the bulldogs, while taking nine for themselves. Picking up first place finishes for the Hawkeyes was sophomore Brian Farris in the 200 (1:43.66) and 500 freestyle (4:47.77), freshman Conor Dwyer in the 50 (21.19) and 100 freestyle (46.00), freshman Max Dittmer in the 100 backstroke (52.94), sophomore Matt Ryan in the 100 breaststroke (59.75), sophomore Seth Wessels in the 200 butterfly (1:56.83), sophomore Wil Whaley in the 200 backstroke (1:55.77), and freshman Alex Dragon in the 200 breaststroke (2:12.96). The 200 Medley Relay (1:36.48) team of senior Andrej Lenert, freshman Sean Hagan, Dragon, and Dwyer also took top honors.
The women were led by sophomore Margie Chamberlin who had first place finishes in the 200 (2:06.18) and 100 butterfly (58.00) and sophomore Julie Feingold who took top honors in the 100 (1:05.85) and 200 breastroke (2:24.02). Joining them with individual victories was junior Ashley Dell in the 1,000 freestyle (10:26.31), junior Alison Gschwend in the 200 backstroke (2:05.06), and freshman Katarina Tour in the 200 IM (2:10.29). The relay team of Gschwend, sophomore Julie deBruin, freshman Kelsie Neubauer, and sophomore Christine Kuczek won the 400 freestyle relay (3:30.17), the last event of the night to seal the team victory.
Iowa’s next competition will be the Ohio State Invitational November 30 – December 2.
