ESPN.com: 'The Hawkeyes turned the corner'

Dec. 25, 2007

From 2001-06, the University of Iowa football program participated in six consecutive postseason bowl games. Ivan Maisel of ESPN.com, like many avid Hawkeye fans, expects that streak to begin again in 2008.

Maisel, in an on-line column posted Christmas Eve, noted that “Iowa didn’t stand in place. The Hawkeyes turned the corner.”

Supporting that claim is the fact Iowa will have at least 15 returning starters and more than 50 returning letterwinners in 2008, from a team that won four of its final six games this season. UI head coach Kirk Ferentz played 31 freshmen (11 true and 20 redshirt) as the Hawkeyes compiled a record of 6-6 overall, 4-4 in the Big Ten.

“A year from now, Iowa should be talking about football, not politics,” Maisel writes.
