COLUMBIA, MO – The University of Iowa swimming and diving teams were in Columbia, MO today for a meet with the Missouri Tigers and Kansas Jayhawks. The women swam against both the number 18 Tigers and the Jayhawks and were beaten by Missouri 156-86 and by Kansas 144-89. The men lost to number 19 Missouri 183-117. The results drop the men’s record to 3-4 (1-3 Big Ten) and the women’s to 4-7 (2-2 Big Ten).

Several Hawkeye season and career best times were set in the Mizzou Aquatics Center, most notably by freshman Conor Dwyer. In winning three individual events, Dwyer set career bests in the 100 (45.97) and 200 freestyle (1:38.93). He also won the 500 freestyle (4:38.86) as part of a 1-2-4 Iowa finish, and anchored the winning 400 freestyle relay (3:05.77). Sophomore Wil Whaley’s time of 1:49.42 in the 200 backstroke was good enough for a first place finish as well. Sophomore Brian Farris swam a career best time in the 1,000 freestyle (9:38.28), which was good enough for second place.

Head Coach Marc Long commented on Dwyer’s success. “I really like the way Conor took charge of his races. This is the kind of thing that we’ve been working on. These races are just getting him more prepared for the championship meets we have coming up, and I think he is headed in a good direction.”

The women were led by junior Alison Gschwend, who won the 200 backstroke with a career best time of 2:02.07. Sophomore Julie deBruin also got in on the action by notching a season best time of 23.66 in her first place vs. Missouri 50 freestyle effort. Other winners on the day were sophomore Christine Kuczek in the 100 freestyle (51.81) vs. Missouri and sophomore Laura Mozdzen in the 200 butterfly (2:04.45) vs. Kansas.

“We had some great swims and outstanding races today,” said coach Long. “The scores may seem a little lopsided, but Alison Gschwend, Christine Kuczek, and many others really swam good today.”

The Hawkeyes women will return to action for senior day when Northern Iowa comes to Iowa City on February 1. The meet is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. The men are off until the Big Ten Championships commence in Ann Arbor, MI on February 28.
