Iowa City, IA –
University of Iowa women’s tennis player senior Jacqueline Lee has been named Co-Big Ten Athlete of the week, with Wisconsin’s Emese Kardhordo. The announcement came Wednesday from the Big Ten office. This is Lee’s first time receiving the award.
Lee earned the honor after defending her singles tournament title at the 2008 Hawkeye Invitational last weekend. She went undefeated in singles play, first defeating Veronika Leszayova of Drake (6-2, 6-2). Lee continued her winning streak on the second day of competition beating Meghana Paritala of Northern Iowa (6-2, 6-0) and Iowa State’s Erin Karonis (6-0, 6-4). Lee also was successful in two of her three doubles matches. Lee and teammate Alexis Dorr lost their opening match but rebounded to defeat Northern Iowa’s team of Kanade/Moraes 8-5. Lynne Poggensee-Wei and Lee finished doubles play for the weekend with an 8-5 victory over Kalashnikova/Aprodu of Drake.
“It’s a great honor for Jacqueline to win her first Big Ten Athlete of the Week award,” said Iowa Head Coach Daryl Greenan. “I think she’s very deserving. She always works hard. She had a good weekend defending her title at the Hawkeye Invitational.”
