The #46 Hawkeyes won their first dual meet of the spring season tonight, defeating Marquette 5-2. Iowa was undefeated in doubles play, earning the doubles point to open the meet and continued on to post a 4-2 record for singles play. Tonight’s win marks the fifth consecutive season that Iowa has defeated Marquette in a dual meet.
Iowa started the meet off strong, sweeping doubles competition. At the number one position, Jacqueline Lee and Alexis Dorr defeated Marquette’s Lauren Little and Shannon Brown 8-3. Mili Veselinovic and Merel Beelen posted a solid 8-1 victory over Maria Calbeto and Christina Ruiz while Kayla Berry and Lynne Poggensee-Wei were also successful, defeating Erin Watkins and Rachael Hush 8-4.
In singles play, the Hawkeyes were victorious in four of their six matches. Senior Lee defeated Lauren Little 6-3, 6-3 at the number one position. Veselinovic shut down Erin Watkins with a 6-1, 6-1 victory, while Beelen came out of a tough match on top after defeating Maria Calbeto 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Dominating her match, Dorr defeated Christina Ruiz 6-0, 6-0. Kelcie Klockenga played an intense match before falling 6-2, 4-6, 3-6 to Rachael Hush while Berry also was defeated in a close match 4-6, 6-1, 3-6 by Robin Metzler.
“It was a great win for us today and I was pleasantly surprised that the girls came out aggressive and played well in doubles, we were fired up in doubles. We carried that momentum into singles,” said Iowa Head Coach Daryl Greenan. “It was a good way to start the season and hopefully that will give us some confidence going into a tough match against DePaul on Sunday.”
The Hawkeyes will host the DePaul Blue Demons on Sunday, Feb. 10, at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. Play is scheduled to begin at noon, with doubles play opening the meet.
