Hawkeyes Edge DePaul To Bring Record To 2-0

The #46 Hawkeyes earned their second win of season today after defeating #60 DePaul. Iowa swept the doubles competition for the second match in a row, bringing their doubles record to 6-0, and went 3-3 in singles play to defeat the Blue Demons 4-3.

The Hawkeyes fought hard in doubles competition to open the match and swept doubles 3-0, earning the point. At the number one position, Jacqueline Lee and Alexis Dorr claimed a hard-fought win over DePaul’s Dunja Antunovic and Gergana Ganeva 8-7(5). Mili Veselinovic and Merel Beelen defeated Selma Salkovic and Beatrix Csordas 8-5, while Kayla Berry and Lynne Poggensee-Wei claimed an 8-3 win over Katarina Milinkovic and Kristen Gambrell.

In singles action, Iowa posted a 3-3 record for the day. Lee, playing at the number one position for the Hawkeyes, fell to Dunja Autunovica 7-6(5), 6-4 in a tough match, but Veselinovic earned a solid 6-1, 6-0 victory over Gergana Ganeva. Beelen fell in a hard-fought 7-5, 6-3 loss to Selma Salkovic but Iowa kept up its momentum with Dorr’s win over Katarina Milinkovic 6-1, 6-2. Berry fell 6-0, 6-2 to Beatrix Csordas but Kelcie Klockenga earned the last singles point for Iowa after defeating Kirsten Gambrell 6-1, 7-5 in an intense match.

“I’m excited that we came out 2-0 this weekend against two good teams. Our girls fought hard and deserved the wins.” said Iowa Head Coach Daryl Greenan. “Kelcie (Klockenga) really stepped up today when we needed her to clench the match against DePaul. I’m especially excited about going 6-0 in doubles and hopefully we can carry this momentum into two tough matches against Alabama and Mississippi next weekend.”

The Hawkeyes continue their spring season next Saturday, Feb. 16 hosting Alabama at 12 p.m. Iowa will also be hosting Mississippi on Sunday, Feb. 17 at 11 a.m. Competition will take place at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex on the University of Iowa campus.
