Jenifer Simbhudas Earns Big Ten Honor

Feb. 13, 2008

IOWA CITY, IA –

University of Iowa women’s gymnastics junior Jenifer Simbhudas has been named Co-Big Ten Gymnast of the Week, with Penn State’s Brandi Personett. The announcement came Wednesday from the Big Ten office. This is Simbhudas’ first career weekly honor.

Simbhudas receives the honor after a strong performance against Ohio State last Saturday. Placing first in two individual events and the all-around competition, Simbhudas helped lead the No. 28 Hawkeyes to a 195.400 tie against No. 22 Ohio State and its best team score since 2005.

Simbhudas placed first on floor with a new personal best score of 9.875. She also tied for first in the vault with a 9.825. Following her two first place victories, Simbhudas tied for second place on the uneven bars with a 9.825 and tied for fourth on the balance beam. Simbhudas took first place in the all-around competition with a total score of 39.300 and posted a new personal season-best.

“We’re really excited for Jenifer,” said Iowa Head Coach Larissa Libby. “It’s just a testament to the work that she has done and to her gymnastics. It’s nice to have that kind of recognition so early in the season and I think it gives the team a goal and an idea of where the program is going. It’s been a long time coming for Jenifer and we couldn’t be happier for her. She is one of the most talented athletes on the squad and it’s a challenge to settle in to collegiate gymnastics and learn how everything works. We’re hopeful that it is the first of many to come.”
