Hawkeyes Head To National Invitational Tournament

THIS WEEK — The University of Iowa men’s golf team will travel to Tucson, AZ, to compete in the 2008 National Invitational Tournament. The tournament is hosted by the University of Arizona and will be held at the Omni Tucson National Golf Club. Their will be a practice round held Saturday, March 22. Competition consists of 54 holes, beginning Sunday. Teams will also play 18 holes Monday and Tuesday. Tee times will begin at 10 a.m. CT. Live scoring will be available on the internet at www.golfstat.com.

OMNI TUCSON NATIONAL GOLF CLUB — The Omni Tucson National Golf Club is the site of the tournament. A fine golf course located in Tucson, Arizona, it is a par 72 and consists of 7,033 yards.

THE COMPETITION — Teams competing along with Iowa are Arizona State, Houston, Kent State, New Mexico, Notre Dame, Pepperdine, Sam Houston State, TCU, Tulsa, UNLV, UTEP, Virginia and Arizona.

LAST MEET — After a successful fall season, where the Hawkeyes tied or set eleven team records, Iowa has started the spring season by competing in two exhibition matches. The Hawkeyes first competed in the Arizona Dual Match. There Iowa fell in an exhibition dual match to Scottsdale Community College, the defending National Junior College Division I national champions. Next, the Hawkeyes traveled to Dallas, TX, to compete in the first annual Black and Gold Alumni Classic.

HEAD COACH Mark Hankins — Hankins is in his first year as Iowa’s head men’s golf coach. He was named Big Ten Coach of the Year, at Michigan State, in 2005 and 2007 after leading the Spartans to Big Ten Championships. Hankins also led the Spartans to five NCAA tournament appearances in his seven years as head coach. He is a native of Mt. Pleasant, IA, and a graduate of Iowa State University.
