No. 49 Iowa Defeats Lamar, 6-1

BEAUMONT, TX – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team defeated Lamar Wednesday, 6-1. With the victory, No. 49 Iowa moves to 7-3 overall on the season.

The Hawkeyes started strong, claiming all three doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, J.P. Ritchie and Bart van Monsjou defeated Kanczula/Bogusz 8-4. Greg Holm and Reinoud Haal paired up to defeat Gomes/Snyder, 8-1. In addition, Christian Bierich and Austen Kauss continued their strong play, defeating Janjic/Wanja, 8-4, at the No. 3 position.

Iowa continued its strong play during singles competition, taking five matches on the day. Senior Bart van Monsjou continued his stellar play at No. 1 singles, defeating Filip Kanczula 6-2, 6-4. Christian Bierich, competing for the first time this season at No. 2 singles, defeated Maciej Bogusz 6-4, 6-1. At the No. 4 position, Reinoud Haal defeated Diego Snyder 6-2, 6-1. Tommy McGeorge and Greg Holm also claimed victories for the Hawkeyes. McGeorge defeated Allan Gomes 6-3, 6-1 and Holm defeated David Wanja 6-2, 6-1.

“It is a good win for us, particularly playing outdoors for the first time,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton. “It was also good preparation for us heading into three tough matches this weekend.”

The Hawkeyes will compete in the Rice Invite this weekend. Iowa will face No. 17 Rice (Friday), No. 67 San Diego (Saturday) and No. 72 Middle Tennessee State (Sunday).
