HOUSTON, TX – The No. 49 University of Iowa men’s tennis team could not get past No. 17 Rice Friday, falling to the Owls 4-2. With the loss, the Hawkeyes’ record falls to 7-4 overall, 1-1 in Big Ten Conference play.
The Hawkeyes claimed two winners in singles competition, including senior J.P. Ritchie and sophomore Reinould Haal. Ritchie defeated Chong Wang 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 and Haal dispatched Filip Zivojinovic 6-2, 6-4. In No. 1 singles competition, Iowa senior Bart van Monsjou dropped a close decision to Bruno Rosa 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (6-5), 6-3.
In doubles competition, the Hawkeyes could not get anything going against Rice, dropping all three matches.
The Hawkeyes continues competition in the Rice Invite Saturday, facing No. 67 San Diego.
