HOUSTON, TX – The No. 49 University of Iowa men’s tennis team bounced back Saturday and knocked off No. 67 San Diego 4-1. The dual win improves the Hawkeyes’ record to 8-4 overall, including 1-1 in Big Ten Conference play.
“This was a good win for our team,” Head Coach Steve Houghton said. “It was especially important for us because it added another win against a team that is nationally ranked.”
Iowa played well in singles competition, as four Hawkeyes won their individual matches. In No. 1 singles, senior Bart van Monsjou defeated Liversage 6-3, 7-5. At No. 3 singles, senior J.P. Ritchie knocked off Coetzee 7-6 (3), 6-1. Rounding out singles competition, sophomore Tommy McGeorge earned a hard-fought win against Munoz 7-6 (5), 6-2 and junior Gregory Holm downed Schive 7-5, 6-2. Junior Christian Bierich and sophomore Reinoud Haal also participated in Saturday’s dual meet, but each of their matches did not finish.
In doubles competition, the Hawkeyes only claimed one winner on the day, as the senior duo of van Monsjou/Ritchie defeated Liversage/Coetzee 8-6.
The Hawkeyes will wrap up their stay in Houston Sunday as they take on Middle Tennessee State. Match time is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
