HOUSTON, TX – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team defeated No. 72 Middle Tennessee State at the Rice Invite Sunday, 4-2. With the victory, No. 49 Iowa moves to 9-4 overall on the season. Additionally, the Hawkeyes have now defeated four nationally ranked teams.
The Hawkeyes started strong, claiming the doubles point. Seniors Bart van Monsjou and J.P. Ritchie defeated Peers/Cowden 8-5, at the No. 1 position. At the No. 3 position, Christian Bierich and Greg Holm paired up to defeat Nowak/Paoliello 8-2.
Bart van Monsjou led the Hawkeyes in singles play. He defeated John Peers at the No. 1 singles position 6-4, 1-6, 6-2. At No. 2 singles, Christian Bierich defeated Morgan Richard 6-2, 6-4. In addition, Greg Holm defeated Alex McCann at the No. 6 position, 6-2, 6-3.
The Hawkeyes had a successful spring trip, finishing 3-1. In addition to Iowa’s win Sunday, the Hawkeyes defeated Lamar and No. 67 San Diego and fell to No. 17 Rice.
“We had a great spring trip, defeating two nationally ranked teams,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton. “We also defeated some nationally ranked singles players and doubles teams.”
The Hawkeyes will compete at Michigan Friday, March 28. Competition is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
