COLUMBUS, OH – The 43rd-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes fell 4-3 in a close match this morning to No. 31 Ohio State (14-3, 2-1 Big Ten) at the OSU Varsity Tennis Center. Today’s match brings Iowa to 1-2 in Big Ten play and 10-3 overall this season.
The Hawkeyes lost the doubles point to the Buckeyes after going 0-3 in doubles play, but Iowa rebounded in singles competition to fight back, winning three of the six singles matches played.
Freshman Alexis Dorr started singles play off for the Hawkeyes, falling 6-2, 6-3 to Julie Blackmore at the number three spot. Kelcie Klockenga was defeated 7-5, 6-1 by Cami Hubbs, but Mili Veselinovic earned the Hawkeyes first point of the match by defeating Angela DiPastina 6-4, 6-3.
Merel Beelen was defeated at the number four spot by Christina Keesey 6-4, 7-5, and Lynne Poggensee-Wei earned a singles point for Iowa with her hard-fought 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win over Caitlin O’Keefe. Senior Jacqueline Lee finished singles play off for Iowa at the number one position, defeating Ohio State’s Paloma Escobedo in a tight match and earned Iowa’s final singles point with the 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 1-0 (10-3) victory.
“We’ve have had a couple of heartbreaking loses against good teams on the road,” said Iowa Head Coach Daryl Greenan. “I am proud of how the girls have competed and they have put themselves in a position to win. Good things will happen if we stay healthy and maintain the same level of competitiveness we had in the first half of the season.”
The Hawkeyes return home this week to host the Michigan Wolverines Saturday at 11 a.m. and will conclude the weekend against Penn State on Sunday at 11 a.m. Both matches will be played at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex on the University of Iowa campus.
