AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND – University of Iowa freshman swimmer Verity Hicks has completed the 2008 Olympic trials in her home country of New Zealand. Hicks had a very successful meet which included two fifth places and an eighth-place finish.

“The Olympic trials was an interesting and fun meet that was swum like the Olympics will be this year,” said Hicks. “I’m not quite back to my personal best times, but I swam season bests and felt like it was an improvement from Big Ten’s in February.”

Hicks has qualified for the 2008 Oceania Swimming Championships which will be held June 5-8 in Christchurch, New Zealand. The biannual meet will include national teams from New Zealand, Australia, Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, and other surrounding Pacific islands.

“I’m excited about the Oceania Championships in June as I have been out of international competition for the last 18 months. It provides a good opportunity for further improvements and getting closer to my best times. I’m also looking forward to swimming in my home country of New Zealand again.”
