MADISON, WI – The 53rd-ranked University of Iowa men’s tennis team fell to 32nd-ranked Wisconsin Saturday, 6-1. The Hawkeyes are now 10-8 overall and 2-5 in Big Ten play on the season.
The Badgers claimed the doubles point, taking two of three matches. At No. 1 doubles, the 40th-ranked duo of seniors Bart van Monsjou and J.P. Ritchie fell to Moritz Baumann/Nolan Polley, 8-6. Patrick Dwyer and Greg Holm were unable to come away with a victory at the No. 2 position, falling to Michael Dierberger/Luke Rassow-Kantor, 8-2. Christian Bierich and Reinoud Haal defeated Marek Michalicka/Jeremy Sonkin at No. 3 doubles. The pair was victorious, 8-7 (5).
The Hawkeyes were only able to come away with one singles victory on the day. Senior Bart van Monsjou, ranked 69th nationally in men’s singles, defeated 44th-ranked Moritz Baumann 6-2, 7-5. Playing at the No. 1 position all season, van Monsjou has now defeated seven nationally ranked singles players during his senior campaign. Senior J.P. Ritchie fell at the No. 2 position, losing 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-2 to No. 100 Nolan Polley. At No. 3 singles, junior Christian Bierich fell to No. 113 Marek Michalicka, 6-3, 6-1. Jeremy Sonkin defeated Reinoud Haal 6-0, 6-3, at the No. 4 position and sophomore Tommy McGeorge fell 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 to Felipe Bellido at the No. 5 position. Additionally, Greg Holm fell 6-7 (5), 6-4, 11-9, to Michael Dierberger.
The Hawkeyes will compete at Northwestern Sunday. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
