IOWA CITY, IA – The 53rd-ranked University of Iowa men’s tennis team defeated Purdue 5-2, Saturday at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. With the victory, the Hawkeyes are now 12-8 overall and 4-5 in Big Ten play on the season.
Iowa claimed the doubles point, sweeping all three matches. The 46th-ranked duo of seniors Bart van Monsjou and J.P. Ritchie defeated Kuzmanovic/Rose 8-5, at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, Greg Holm and Patrick Dwyer paired up to defeat Bijelica/Nienberg 8-4. Christian Bierich and Austen Kauss rallied from a 5-0 deficit to win at No. 3 singles. The pair battled back to defeat Fuenmayor/Ramos 8-7 (5).
During singles play, the match was moved indoors due to inclement weather. Little could stop the Hawkeyes though as they claimed four singles victories on the day. 74th-ranked senior Bart van Monsjou continued his excellent play this season, defeating Branko Kuzmanovic 6-2, 6-3, at No. 1 singles. Christian Bierich clinched the victory for Iowa at No. 2 singles. He defeated Slavko Bijelica 7-5, 6-3. Tommy McGeorge and Greg Holm also claimed victories for the Hawkeyes. McGeorge defeated Griff Nienberg, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (1) at No. 5 singles and Holm defeated Paul Foley, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 6 singles.
“It was another good win for us against a team we have struggled with the last few years,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton. “We have now defeated eight nationally ranked teams and we are looking forward to senior day tomorrow.”
The Hawkeyes will host 16th-ranked Illinois Sunday. It will be the final regular season dual match for Iowa and will also be senior day. The match is scheduled to begin at noon.
