THIS WEEK
The University of Iowa women’s golf team heads to State College, PA, for the Big Ten Championships starting Friday, April 25. Michigan State won the title in 2007.
THE COMPETITION
All 11 Big Ten universities will compete this weekend at Penn State. The Championships will be held at Penn State’s Blue Course. The 72-hole format is split throughout three days, with 36 holes Friday and 18 each Saturday and Sunday. Each round is scheduled to tee off at 8 a.m. (EDT).
The Big Ten Network will televise the Championship round of the Big Ten Women’s Golf Championships May 13 at 7 p.m. (CDT).
LINEUP
Head Coach Kelly Crawford’s lineup remains the same: seniors Melanie Boyles and Jill Marcum, juniors Tyrette Metzendorf and Becky Quinby, and freshmen Laura Cilek and Brianna Coopman.
LAST COMPETITION
The Hawkeyes finished in ninth place last week at the Lady Buckeye Invitational, finishing ahead of fellow Big Ten rivals Illinois and Minnesota. Senior Melanie Boyles and junior Tyrette Metzendorf led the Hawkeyes, as they both finished tied for 18th-place.
LAST YEAR
At the Big Ten Championships in 2007, the Hawkeyes took home an eighth place finish. Individually, Metzendorf finished in 32nd place, while Boyles finished tied for 39th place.
METZENDORF’S BREAK OUT YEAR
The aforementioned Metzendorf has had a breakout year of sorts for Coach Crawford and the Hawkeyes.The Winter Haven, FL, native has finished in the indivdual Top 20 in eight of the ten competitions this year and broke an Iowa school record for an 18-hole score when she shot a 68 at the Mary Fossum Invitational this past September. The junior was also named Big Ten Women’s Golfer of the Week during the week of February 11 for her performance at the Baja Invitational.
