UNIVERSITY PARK, PA – The University of Iowa women’s golf team is currently in ninth place after 36 holes at the Big Ten Championships, hosted by Penn State University. Purdue leads the field in first place, nine strokes ahead of second place Michigan State.
The Hawkeyes struggled out of the gates Friday morning, as they shot a 325 in round one, but turned things around in the afternoon. A remarkable turnaround followed in round two, as the Hawkeyes shot a 291, the best round of golf the Hawkeyes have played as a team all season.
Senior Melanie Boyles (+5, 149), who tied for 18th place last week at the Lady Buckeye Invitational, continued her strong play Friday, ending the day tied for seventh overall on the individual leaderboard. Her one-under-par 71 in round two is tied for 15th on Iowa’s all-time list for a low 18-hole score.
Also, junior Tyrette Metzendorf (+7, 151) placed her name in the Iowa record books for the second time this season. The Winter Haven, FL, native shot two-under-par (70) in the second round, which ties former Hawkeye Leslie Gumm for all-time low 18-hole round at the Big Ten Championships. Metzendorf currently holds Iowa’s record for a low 18-hole round with a 68, which she shot at the Mary Fossum Invitational in September. She ended the day tied in 15th place.
Two UI freshmen, Brianna Coopman (+15, 159) and Laura Cilek (+19, 163), were playing in their first-ever Big Ten Championships, and finished the day tied for 46th and 55th place, respectively. Senior Jill Marcum is tied in 48th place (+16, 160), while junior Becky Quinby (+19, 163) is tied with Cilek at 55th place.
Play at the Big Ten Championships will continue Saturday with 18 holes beginning at 8 a.m. (EDT).
