Campbell selected as top wide receivers coach

June 10, 2008

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Erik Campbell has not coached a single play for the University of Iowa, but already he is providing good exposure for himself and the Hawkeye football program.

Campbell was selected as the top wide receivers coach in college football by CBS Sports.com. The web site is running a 10-part summer series rating the top Division I football coaches in the country. Bruce Walker of Missouri was named the top tight ends coach in the nation. The site will choose the top running backs coach on Thursday, June 12.

“Do the names Braylon Edwards, Mario Manningham, Adrian Arrington, Amani Toomer, Steve Breaston and David Terrell ring a bell?” CBS Sposrts.com asks. “Those are receivers Campbell coached during his 13 seasons at Michigan. There were more — so many that Michigan (and Campbell) produced a 1,000 receiver eight consecutive seasons from 1998-2005. During that time, Edwards became the first Big 10 player to post three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons.

“Yes, Michigan attracted some freakishly good receivers during Campbell’s time at Michigan. But they also got better after getting there.”
