MALIBU, CA – On the final day of the Nike Pepperdine Invitational, the University of Iowa soccer team fell to San Diego, 1-0. Iowa’s record now falls to 2-3-0 on the season, with all three losses coming by one goal.
Despite the loss, Head Coach Ron Rainey liked what he saw from his team.
“I thought we played very well today,” said Rainey. “We played to our strengths and kept much better control of the ball. We looked more comfortable out there today than we did Friday, but there are things we need to improve on.”
San Diego’s Stephanie Ochs scored the lone goal of the game for the Toreros in the 34th minute, when she rifled a shot past Iowa goalkeeper Kali Feiereisel into the upper-left corner for her first goal of the season. The Hawkeyes had four shots-on-goal Sunday, but could not capitalize. Junior Alexandria Seydel led Iowa with three shots and gave the Hawkeyes one final chance with 25 seconds left in the match, but her shot was blocked, sealing the win for San Diego.
For the fifth straight match, Rainey has rotated Feiereisel and Emily Moran at goalkeeper. Feiereisel started the match and made one save while Moran started the second half and made three saves.
Iowa got a scare halfway through the first half when sophomore forward Keli McLaughlin went down with an apparent leg injury. She was held out for the remainder of the match, but Rainey was optimistic that McLaughlin will be ready for next weekend’s matches. The Alsip, Ill., native has two goals on the season and will be re-evaluated Monday or Tuesday.
After playing a pair of teams from the West Coast Conference, the Hawkeyes now shift their attention to two teams from the Missouri Valley Conference. Iowa travels to in-state rival Northern Iowa Friday before coming back to Iowa City Sunday and hosting Creighton. Match times are scheduled for 7 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
