Hyink Nabs Big Ten Player of the Week

Sept. 15, 2008

IOWA CITY, IA – University of Iowa senior forward Stephanie Hyink was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week for her efforts this past weekend against Northern Iowa and Creighton. The announcement came Monday from the Big Ten Conference office.

Hyink is the third player in school history to receive the Offensive Player of the Week award and the first since former Hawkeye Katelyn Quinn received the honor in November of 2003. She is the first student-athlete to win a Player of the Week award since sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Swanson was named co-Defensive Player of the Week last November.

“It’s a great individual honor for Steph,” said Head Coach Ron Rainey. “It reflects on how well the team played this weekend as a whole.”

The Temecula, CA, native scored both of Iowa’s goals in last Friday’s 2-0 victory over Northern Iowa and dished out two assists in last Sunday’s 2-0 win over Creighton. The senior now has 13 goals and 10 assists in her career.

The Hawkeyes hit the road this weekend to take on a pair of Big 12 opponents. Iowa visits Missouri Friday for a match with the Tigers before heading to intra-state rival Iowa State Sunday for a match with the Cyclones. Sunday’s match with Iowa State is the third event in the Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series. Iowa currently leads the series this season, 3-2.
