ANN ARBOR, MI – The University of Iowa soccer team opened up Big Ten play on the road Friday at Michigan, playing to a scoreless draw with the Wolverines. The Hawkeyes’ record is now 5-4-1 on the season.
“It was a difficult Big Ten game,” said Head Coach Ron Rainey. “It went back and forth for the 110 minutes. I was very proud of our effort and work rate through the whole match.”
Freshman Morgan Showalter, who entered Friday’s match tied for second in the Big Ten in assists with seven, showed her offensive flash throughout the match, firing off four shots. The Cedar Rapids, IA, native tried to break the tie in the 108th minute, but her shot was blocked.
Both teams played solid defense all evening long. The match featured only 15 total shots, including two shots-on-goal. Three Hawkeyes played the entire 110 minutes – Showalter, and sophomores Jenna Aleo and Keli McLaughlin.
Sophomore Kali Feiereisel started the match but did not record a save. Freshman Emily Moran recorded one save while playing the entire second half and both overtime periods.
The Hawkeyes conclude their four-match road trip Sunday, travelling to East Lansing, MI, to take on the Michigan State Spartans at 11 a.m. (CST). The match will be televised as part of a double-header on the Big Ten Network.
