IOWA CITY, IA – The University of Iowa soccer team fended off a late offensive surge from Indiana, winning 1-0, in their home conference opener. Iowa improves its record to 6-5-1 (1-1-1), while Indiana drops its third straight to move to 5-7-0 (0-3-0).
“Very pleased with the defensive effort today,” Head Coach Ron Rainey said. “They came at us pretty hard but we were able to play very well and organized in the back third. It was an excellent team performance.”
Iowa struck in the 19th minute when freshman Alyssa Cosnek scored her sixth goal of the season. Sophomore goalkeeper Kali Feiereisel punted a goal kick into the middle of the field and an Indiana defender headed the ball backwards, which played right into Cosnek’s running lane. The Aliquippa, PA, native then split two Hoosier defenders and beat IU goalkeeper Lindsay Campbell with a shot that ended in the back left corner of the net.
The Hoosiers had a chance to tie the game in the 66th minute, but the Hawkeyes dodged a bullet when a shot by IU’s Jocelyn Moses hit the post. Indiana controlled much of the tempo early in the first half, rocketing four shots through the first 20 minutes. Overall, Iowa was outshot by Indiana 14-7.
After a rough outing last Sunday against Michigan State, Feiereisel started the match and made four saves. Freshman Emily Moran entered at halftime and made three saves.
The Hawkeyes will look to keep the winning streak going Sunday afternoon, when they face North Dakota State in the final non-conference match of the season. It will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
