IOWA CITY, IA —The University of Iowa men’s and women’s swimming and diving team hosted their annual Black and Gold Intrasquad meet this morning at the Field House Pool in Iowa City, IA. After a close competition, the Gold squad pulled out the victory over the Black squad, 135-109.

The 14-event meet marked the team’s first competition in the pool this season. The scoring in today’s meet was set at 7-0 for relays and 5-3-1 for individual events, which set the stage for a first-rate competition between the teams, as each squad boasted talented swimmers.

Heading into the 400 Freestyle Relay, the final event of the meet, the score was 128-102 with the Gold Squad in the lead. The women’s Black 400 Free Relay team sealed a narrow victory over the women’s Gold 400 Free Relay team, with a time of 3:32.28 – 3:33.29, to make the score 128-109. However the men’s Gold Squad secured the win, and concluded the meet, by taking the 400 Free Relay over the men’s Black Squad 3:12.50 – 3:18.94.

“This was just a fun opportunity for us to get to see everyone race,” said Iowa Head Coach Marc Long. “After all the aerobic and strength concentrated practicing we’ve been doing, it is a good time of year to get in the pool and get ready for the upcoming dual meet season.”

The Hawkeyes will open the 2008-09 season this Friday at home. Iowa will host Truman State University at 4 p.m. in the Field House Pool. The meet is open to the public at no charge.
