UNIVERSITY PARK, PA – The University of Iowa field hockey team was defeated by No. 13 Penn State Friday, 2-1. The fifth-ranked Hawkeyes are now 10-3 overall and 2-1 in Big Ten Conference play on the season.
“We started out flat today,” said Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum. “Penn State’s defense did a great job. They played strong and took us out of our rhythm. We have to rebound and get ready for Virginia tomorrow.”
Penn State struck first as Allison Scola scored in the 14th minute to make the score 1-0 in favor of the Nittany Lions. The defenses held strong for the remainder of the half, and the frame ended with Penn State leading, 1-0.
In the 46th minute, senior Roz Ellis scored her second goal of the season off a corner. This tied the contest at one apiece.
The Nittany Lions answered in the 63rd minute off a corner. Daneen Zug scored to put Penn State ahead, 2-1. The goal was assisted by Scola and Jen Long.
The Hawkeyes would muster three shots in the final minutes but were unable to score.
Iowa battles No. 10 Virginia tomorrow at 1 p.m. (CT). The match will be played at AstroTurf Field in University Park, PA.
