UNIVERSITY PARK, PA – The University of Iowa soccer team wrapped up its final road trip of the season Sunday afternoon, but dropped a match to Penn State, 1-0, in overtime. With the loss, Iowa is now 8-8-1 on the season, including a mark of 2-4-1 in Big Ten play.
Penn State’s Katie Schoepfer, who came into the weekend leading the Big Ten in shots, scored her ninth goal of the season 29 seconds into overtime to give the Nittany Lions the victory.
Despite the loss, Head Coach Ron Rainey was pleased with the way his team performed against the defending Big Ten champions.
“I thought we worked extremely hard defensively,” said Rainey. “I was very proud of the way we played today in one of the toughest places to play in our conference. It was a super team effort today.”
Iowa’s defense was tested throughout the match by an aggressive Penn State defense. Freshman goalkeeper Emily Moran played the first 24 minutes and made three saves. Sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Swanson played the remainder of the match and made a career-high eight stops.
With three matches left on the season, the Hawkeyes will look to get back in the win column next weekend at the UI Soccer Complex. Iowa hosts Northwestern this Friday at 7 p.m. and Wisconsin next Sunday at 1 p.m. The Black and Gold will then close the season out with a home match against Minnesota Oct. 31 before hosting the Big Ten Tournament Nov. 6-9 in Iowa City.
