MADISON, WI – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team completed the second day of competition Saturday at the Big Ten Singles Championship. The Hawkeyes recorded six singles victories in the main draw.
Christian Bierich, seeded fourth overall, won two matches to lead Iowa. In the round of 64, the senior defeated Patrick Rose of Purdue 6-4, 6-2. He then defeated fellow teammate Mat Nelson in the round of 32, 6-2, 6-1. Bierich will face Michael Dierberger of host school Wisconsin Sunday in the round of 16.
Tommy McGeorge defeated Paul Foley of Purdue in the first round, 6-0, 6-1. The junior then lost to Ruan Roelofse of Illinois, 6-4, 6-2, in the round of 32.
Senior Greg Holm and junior Reinoud Haal also claimed first round victories. Both wins came over opponents from Michigan State. Holm defeated Austin Brooks, 7-6, 4-6, 6-1, and Haal defeated Ron Hulewicz, 6-1, 6-2.
Competition continues Sunday at the Big Ten Singles Championship. Play in the main draw will begin at 8 a.m. (CT).
