IOWA CITY – Seniors Emily Hiza and Kiley Fister have been named ESPN the Magazine Academic all-District. The announcement came Friday from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Hiza was named to the first team and will now appear on the ballot for Academic all-America consideration. She carries a 3.95 grade-point average with a double-major in marketing and finance. The Swink, CO, native was a second team ESPN the Magazine Academic all-District pick last season and is a two-time academic all-Big Ten selection. She has been named to the Dean’s List every semester during her collegiate career and has been given Iowa’s Presidential Committee on Athletics Award three times. Hiza leads the team with 298 digs this season and ranks second on Iowa’s all-time digs list with 1,808. She needs just 124 more digs to become Iowa’s all-time leader.
Fister was a third team selection and has a 3.65 grade-point average in interdepartmental studies with a Spanish minor. Fister, a St. Charles, IL, native, is a two-time academic all-Big Ten pick and has been on the Dean’s List for five semesters. She has also been awarded the school’s Presidential Committee on Athletics Award three times. Fister recently eclipsed the 4,000 career assist mark against Michigan State and has a team-best 746 assists this season. She ranks third in career assists at Iowa with 4,150.
“This is a tremendous honor for Emily and Kiley,” Head Coach Sharon Dingman said. “They are tremendous leaders for our program and our athletic department. They are the epitome of student-athlete. The dedication they show to accomplishing great things on the volleyball court is the same dedication they show in their daily lives. It takes tremendous commitment and discipline to achieve success at a high level and that is what Emily and Kiley are all about.”
Hiza, Fister and the rest of the Hawkeyes return to action tonight against Illinois. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
