Head Coach Lisa Bluder
Opening Statement:
“First of all, I’d like to congratulate Bonnie (Henrickson) and her whole team. I thought they were very good today and well prepared. Bonnie has done a great job, so congratulations to them for a really good game. Also, thanks to the entire Kansas Athletics Department for putting this event on. Their marketing department did a tremendous job by getting the kids here and creating this type of environment for a mid-day, mid-week game is really amazing. A lot of work went into this and they should be commended for it. It was very impressive. I wish our game would have been impressive today. Besides Megan (Skouby), it wasn’t at all. Megan had a great performance. Megan played a lot of minutes and kept her composure, she shot the ball well, got to the free throw line and had four blocked shots. Megan did about everything we asked her to do. I’m really thrilled with her effort. I just wish the rest of the crew would have given her the opportunity to shine in a winning cause. This wasn’t a very good performance, but a lot of it was that Kansas played excellent defense. They disrupted our offense and did a super job of that. The game in my mind was won off our turnovers and off of second chance points. Our inability to box out and take care of the basketball were the two factors in this win.”
On why Iowa struggled:
“I wish I could answer that. I don’t have an answer. I guess I could make one up for you. I don’t know why. We just played like we were really out of our element. We played uncomfortable. Kansas did a great job of being physical with us and using their athleticism against us. We just didn’t counter that very well. Now it is early and we haven’t seen that type of athleticism and I think this will be a great learning environment for us. Hopefully this will help us as the season goes on.”
On KU’s quickness:
“They are very quick off the dribble. They’re very aggressive going to the rim. Again, these are all examples that we can learn from, especially for our four freshmen that were watching today. Hopefully it will result in some improvements in our team, but they are very good off the dribble.”
Center Megan Skouby
On Iowa’s struggles:
“I think we had a lot of offensive errors. We had a whole lot of turnovers today. Boxing out was weak and gave Kansas some points.”
On having a career high in points:
“I’m just disappointed that we couldn’t come up with the win. You have to go out there and give it all you have, so that’s what I did. It just wasn’t enough. We need to get after ourselves in practice and practice better.”
Forward JoAnn Hamlin
On KU’s defense:
“KU just played tremendous defense. We haven’t seen that this season. I think they played better defense than a lot of the teams we are going to see in the Big 10. We weren’t ready for that. We weren’t prepared and that is why we struggled so much.”
On returning to Allen Fieldhouse after transferring from K-State:
“It was great. I was really excited to play here. I kind of wanted to play at 8:30 last night when we got here instead of 11 o’clock in the morning. But it was great that some of the family members were able to travel and watch me play. I wish I could have put on a better performance for them, but I’m really grateful that they got to come out and watch.”
