IOWA CITY, IA – Iowa junior Christine Kuczek has been named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week after an outstanding performance against Iowa State this past Friday. Kuczek helped the Hawkeyes defeat the Cyclones 196-104 as part of the fifth-annual Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk series. The Deerfield, IL, native finished first in the 100 and 200 freestyle races, posting times of 51.81 and 1:52.54, respectively. Her 50 freestyle time of 24.13 was good enough for second place behind teammate Julie deBruin by fifteen-hundredths of a second. With last week’s win, Kuczek now has five first-place finishes in the 100 free and three in the 200 free this season. This is Kuczek’s first Big Ten Swimmer of the Week accolade, and the first for the Iowa women since Alison Gschwend earned the honor Dec. 12, 2006.
