Gatens and his Hawkeye DNA

Jan. 22, 2009

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa freshman Matt Gatens will be featured on the Big Ten Tip-Off Show to be aired Saturday, Jan. 24, at 4:30 p.m. (Iowa time) on the Big Ten Network.

There never seemed to be any doubt that Gatens would become a Hawkeye. He grew up in Iowa City, his father was a Hawkeye basketball letterweinner, his mother was an Iowa cheerleader and two two of his siblings were Hawkeye student-athletes.

Gatens, who verbally committed to Iowa as a freshman in high school, now leads the Hawkeyes in points scored (207), points per game (10.9), minutes played (32.1 per game), three-point field goal percentage (34 of 65, .523) and free throw percentage (41 of 45, .911).

The feature on Gatens and his Hawkeye DNA immediately precedes Iowa’s road game at Penn State (5:05 p.m. tip). Tom Hamilton and Greg Kelser will have the call.

Iowa is 12-7 overall, 2-4 in the Big Ten Conference. Penn State is 15-5, 4-3.
