IOWA CITY, IA – – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team fell to 48th-ranked Denver Sunday, 4-3, at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. The 59th-ranked Hawkeyes are now 2-1 on the season.
“This was a very tough loss against a very good team,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton. “We had our chances. This loss does not change my thinking on how good this team can be.”
Iowa claimed the doubles point to begin the dual, sweeping all three matches. Tommy McGeorge and Will Vasos continued their stellar play at the No. 3 position. The duo defeated Johan Gunnarsson and Yannick Weihs, 8-3. Christian Bierich and Nikita Zotov defeated Ravjot Dhatt and Benny Althaus at No. 1 doubles, 8-5, to clinch the doubles point for the Hawkeyes. Reinoud Haal and Greg Holm defeated Johan Gunnarsson and Yannick Weihs at the No. 2 spot, 8-3.
McGeorge and Holm each claimed singles victories for the Hawkeyes. McGeorge defeated Dhatt at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-0. At the No. 5 spot, Holm came back from an early deficit to defeat Gunnarsson, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Haal and Althaus battled for the match at the No. 3 position. Althaus won the third set and the match for Denver, defeating Haal 7-6, 3-6, 6-3.
Iowa will host Illinois State Friday at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. The match is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
