Trust Ferentz, not so-called recruiting `experts'

Feb. 10, 2009

IOWA CITY, Iowa — When University of Iowa head football coach Kirk Ferentz says he’s happy with a recruiting class, you better believe him. Since 2002, the so-called recruiting experts either underestimate the signatures on the UI National Letters of Intent, the Hawkeye coaching staff overachieves with the talent at hand, or both.

According to the website thewizofodds.com, over the past eight seasons, the Hawkeye football recruiting classes have averaged a ranking of 40.9 nationally by Rivals.com. Production on the field tells a different story. Iowa has won 59 games since the 2002 season, the same number as Florida State (average recruiting class ranking of 8.6), and more than Tennessee (57 wins, 14.1 average ranking), Alabama (55, 16.9), Notre Dame (50, 18.4) and UCLA (47, 23.6).
