IOWA CITY, Iowa — The target remains the same despite a variety of challenges, UI Director of Athletics Gary Barta said in a story about the progress on the planning for the revitalization of the UI’s Carver-Hawkeye Arena that appeared in Friday’s editions of the Iowa City Press-Citizen.
“The need is as great as ever,” Barta told Ryan Suchomel, the sports editor of the PC when asked about the effect the economic crisis is having on the project that will provide a much-needed practice facility and other improvements to the spaces used by a long list of UI sports programs including, most notably, Iowa’s men’s basketball, women’s basketball, volleyball and wrestling teams.
“We’re going to complete this project. I said the other day that if that meant delays or modifications, we’d consider that, but that’s not where we’re at right now,” Barta said.
“The need is as great as ever.”

The UI received approval of the schematic design, project description, budget and financing plan for the $47 million addition and revitalization of the 26-year-old facility in July 2008. Approval at that time allowed the UI to move forward with architectural plans and solicitation for bids, and projected completion of the project in the fall of 2011.
