'Madness' Creeping Closer to Carver

Feb. 23, 2009

IOWA CITY, Iowa –A guy by the name of “Charlie Creme” is to ESPN and women’s college basketball what a guy by the name of “Joe Lunardi” is to ESPN and men’s college basketball. Both are immersed in their world of expertise and share for the world to review their hard work under the title, “Bracketology.”

Why is this important to Lisa Bluder and the University of Iowa women’s basketball team?

Well, Charlie’s latest 64-team bracket includes Bluder’s hard-charging Hawkeyes, winners of nine of their last 11 games. That’s not news. Iowa was included in Charlie’s view of the field for this year’s NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship earlier this month.

What is news is the fact that Charlie’s most recent summary describes Iowa’s position as the No. 8 seed in the part of the tournament that plays through the regional to be staged in Berkeley, Calif., as “secure” – and that’s good news because, if Charlie is right – and he’s proven over the years to be more right than wrong – Bluder’s Bunch will get to play at least one more game inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena beyond this Thursday’s Senior Day event against Illinois.

You see, the UI’s Carver-Hawkeye Arena is the site of first and second round NCAA Tournament games on Mar. 22 and 24. If they Hawkeyes are invited to participate – and Charlie Crème thinks they will be – Iowa will be one of the four teams taking the floor of Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
