IOWA CITY –
Hawkeye senior Geoff Reins was selected as Big Ten Gymnast of the Week Monday along with Casey Sandy of Penn State. The Buffalo, Grove, IL native earned the honor after scoring two individual wins in a matchup against Illinois last weekend.
Reins broke his previous season high on vault after scoring a 16.05 and placing first in the event. In floor exercise, he grabbed another first place finish, scoring a 15.25. This selection marks the second weekly accolade for Reins who won his first award March 19, 2008.
“No one is more deserving than Geoff Reins to be selected as Big Ten gymnast of the week,” said Hawkeye Head Tom Dunn. “Week after week, he has set an example for his teammates to aspire to. He wins his events, and then goes back to the gym and tries to improve, and then goes out and wins again. He turned it up another notch at Illinois and had his best performances of the season in his home state.”
Reins and the Hawkeyes return to action March 14 when they travel to West Point, NY, to face the U.S. Military Academy. Competition is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
