Hawkeyes Start Strong On Spring Trip

SCOTTSDALE, AZ – – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team defeated Scottsdale Community College Thursday, 5-2. With the victory, the 52nd-ranked Hawkeyes move to 7-1 on the season.

“This was a good performance against a very good junior college team,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton. “This match is very useful in getting some experience playing outdoors for the first time. The experience should help us in upcoming matches.”

Iowa swept all three doubles matches to claim the point. The Hawkeyes have now won the doubles point in all eight of their matches this season and hold a combined record of 21-3. At No. 1 doubles, the 31st-ranked duo of Christian Bierich and Nikita Zotov defeated Javier Millan and Sean O’Grady, 8-6. Tommy McGeorge and Will Vasos continued their strong play at the No. 3 doubles position. The duo defeated Andrew Waltz and Luis Laura, 8-4, to stay undefeated in dual match play. At No. 2 doubles, Reinoud Haal and Greg Holm defeated Tyson McGuffin and Pavel Polak, 8-2.

Iowa kept the momentum going into singles play, winning four of six matches. At the No. 3 position, Haal defeated Laura 6-4, 6-2. Vasos defeated McGuffin at the No. 4 position, 6-4, 6-1. McGeorge defeated Polak 6-0, 6-2, at the No. 5 spot. In addition, Holm defeated Victor Lopes at the No. 6 position, 6-1, 6-2. Iowa will face Northern Arizona Friday in Phoenix, AZ. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. (CST).
