Waco, TX – – Iowa women’s golf team is tied at fourth place after the first day of play at the Baylor Spring Invitational. The team shot rounds of 309 and 313 to tie up with University of Texas San Antonio. Illinois State leads the field with 615, just seven strokes better than the Hawkeyes.
Seniors Tyrette Metzendorf and Becky Quinby both cracked the top ten individual standings today. Metzendorf shot 151 (+7, T6) while Quinby followed close behind, finishing 152 (+8, T9). Laura Cilek and Chelsea Harris rounded out the scorecard for Iowa, shooting matching scores and ending the day tied at 43rd (+17, 161).
Brianna Coopman (169, +25) shot a non-counting score for Iowa and will go into competition tomorrow tied for 70th. Alison Cavanaugh, along with freshman Ann Vrdolyak traveled with the team, competing as individuals in the tournament. Cavanaugh was consistent, shooting 79 both rounds (158, +14). Vrdolyak carded 172 (+28) in her second tournament as a Hawkeye.
The tournament will resume tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m. Iowa looks to continue to play strong, gain strokes on the leader, and finish top five in the 14-team tournament. It would be the second time this season the Hawkeyes finished in the top five.
