EVANSTON, IL – – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team lost at 48th-ranked Northwestern Sunday, 4-3. With the loss, the 58th-ranked Hawkeyes fall to 11-7 overall and 3-5 in Big Ten play on the season. The Wildcats, winners of four-straight, move to 17-6 overall and 5-3 in Big Ten play with the victory.
“This was another tough loss against one of the Big Ten’s hottest teams,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton.
Iowa won two of three doubles matches to claim the point. Tommy McGeorge and Will Vasos competed at the No. 2 position for the first time this season. The duo defeated Joshua Graves and Tobias Reitz 8-5. Greg Holm and Tom Mroziewicz teamed up for the first time. The pair defeated Andrew McCarthy and Alexander Thams 9-8 (7-3) at the No. 3 position to clinch the point.
The Hawkeyes claimed two singles victories on the afternoon. Christian Bierich defeated Marc Dwyer at the No. 1 spot. The senior won 6-2, 6-2. Mroziewicz won again at the No. 6 singles position. The freshman defeated Andrew McCarthy 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, to move to 3-0 in dual play.
Iowa closes the regular season with two Big Ten matches next week. The Hawkeyes will travel to Minnesota Friday in a match scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. Iowa will then face Purdue Sunday in its regular season finale. The Boilermakers and Hawkeyes will face off at noon at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.
