Iowa football has 3 prime-time night games

April 15, 2009

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa football team will spend considerable time under the lights during the 2009 season. The Big Ten Conference announced today that three Hawkeye games — one at home and two on the road — have been selected for prime time telecasts in the fall.

Iowa’s first prime-time game will be at Penn State on Sept. 26 to open Big Ten play. The Hawkeye homecoming contest against Michigan on Oct. 10 is also a prime-timer. Both of those contests are scheduled to kickoff at 7 p.m. (CDT). Iowa’s final prime time game will be at Michigan State on Oct. 24. Kickoff will be 6 p.m. (CDT).

The Penn State and Michigan games will be televised by either ABC or ESPN. The Michigan State game will be shown on the Big Ten Network.

The three prime-time games, the most in Iowa regular-season history, appears to be a reflection of what people think of Iowa’s 2009 squad. Most prognosticators have already picked Iowa in their preseason top 20. Thirteen games (six nonconference) involving Big Ten teams are slated for prime-time during the 2009 season. Iowa and Indiana each have three prime-time games, while five other teams play at night twice.

Iowa has played six night games in Kinnick Stadium (3-3 record). The Hawkeyes lost the first night game played in Kinnick Stadium to Miami, FL (24-7) on Sept. 5, 1992. Iowa also lost to Iowa State (36-31) on Sept. 14, 2002, and Ohio State (38-17) on Sept. 30, 2006. The Hawkeyes defeated Northern Illinois (24-0) on Sept. 18, 1999, Arizona State (21-2) on Sept. 20, 2003, and Syracuse (35-0) on Sept 8, 2007.

The Michigan contest will be just the fourth true night game in Kinnick Stadium history. Iowa games against Northern Illinois (1999), Iowa State (2002) and Arizona State (2003) were 5 p.m. starts, while the Miami, Ohio State and Syracuse contests kicked off at 7 p.m.
