Iowa Rowing Cracks National Rankings

April 15, 2009

IOWA CITY, IA – The University of Iowa women’s rowing team is ranked 18th this week in the USRowing/CRCA Women’s Collegiate Rowing Polls. After gutsy performances last weekend against Michigan, Michigan State and Louisville, the Hawkeyes received 113 votes. Yale University is ranked first in the nation, receiving 483 votes.

Five of the seven Big Ten teams joining Iowa among the nation’s best include Michigan (#4), Michigan State (#5), Ohio State (#8), Wisconsin (#16) and Minnesota (#20). The Hawkeyes will meet those opponents May 2 at the 2009 Big Ten Championships in Columbus, OH.

“Our team and coaching staff are excited to be ranked in the top 20 this week,” said Assistant Coach Carrie Callen. “It’s not a goal that we have been fixated on. However, it is something we knew would naturally happen if we were achieving our other goals.”

Kowal also commented on the tough competition Iowa will see at the Big Ten Championships.

“We will continue to work hard in the next few weeks before we head to the Big Ten’s. It will be another tough weekend of racing, with six of seven Big Ten teams in the top-20,” added Callen.
