MINNEAPOLIS, MN – – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team lost at 33rd-ranked Minnesota Friday, 7-0. With the loss, the 63rd-ranked Hawkeyes fall to 11-8 overall and 3-6 in Big Ten play. The Golden Gophers move to 17-6 overall and 6-3 in conference play with the victory.
“The match was a lot closer than the score indicates but we did not play very well,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton.
Minnesota won two of three doubles matches to claim the point. Senior Greg Holm and freshman Tom Mroziewicz defeated Phillip Arndt and Michael Sicora at the No. 3 position, 8-7 (8-6). Tommy McGeorge and Will Vasos competed at the No. 2 position for the first time this season. The duo fell to Julian Dehn and Tobias Wernet, 8-5. McGeorge and Vasos are 16-3 in dual match play.
Iowa was unable the claim any singles victory on the afternoon. Mroziewicz competed at the No. 5 position for the first time this season. He lost to Julian Dehn 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-6) and is now 3-1 on the season. Iowa closes the regular season Sunday against Purdue. Iowa’s match with the Boilermakers will begin at noon at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. Admission is free.
