IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa running back Shonn Greene, winner of the Doak Walker Award, was selected today in the NFL Draft by the New York Jets. Greene was chosen in the third round with the 65th overall pick.
Greene is the first Hawkeye running back selected in the NFL Draft since Ladell Betts went to the Washington Redskins in the second round in 2002. Greene becomes the 30th player drafted during the Kirk Ferentz Era at Iowa.
Greene was instrumental in leading the Iowa to a 9-4 record and a victory in the Outback Bowl during the 2008 season. He rushed for 1,850 yards and 20 touchdowns with an average of 6.0-yards per attempt. He rushed for 100 yards or more in all 13 Hawkeye games with a season-high 217 yards and four touchdowns during a 38-16 victory against Wisconsin on Oct. 18. The average of 142.31 yards on the ground per game ranked second in the nation.
Prior to the draft, some experts had Greene ranked as the fourth-best running back available (SI.com) and the 58th-best player available (Russ Lande, War Room scouts). A consensus All-American and the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year, Greene saw three running backs taken in the first round Saturday. Georgia’s Knowshon Moreno was picked at No. 12 by Denver, Indianapolis drafted Connecticut’s Donald Brown at No. 27, and Arizona selected Ohio State running back Chris Wells with the 31st pick. Philadelphia drafted University of Pittsburgh running back LeSean McCoy in the second round (No. 53).
The selection of Greene marks the 32nd consecutive season that Iowa has had a player chosen in the NFL Draft.
