IOWA CITY, IA – – The ninth-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team fell to No. 4 North Carolina, 5-0, today at Grant Field in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The Black and Gold are 0-2 on the young season.

“We came out with the attitude that we wanted to represent our home field,” said Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum. “We were pretty outmatched from front to back. North Carolina is an amazing veteran team. We will get back to it tomorrow and regroup for next weekend.”

North Carolina scored four goals in the first half and never looked back. Katelyn Falgowski scored the Tar Heels’ first goal in the 11th minute. She chipped in from close off a great pass from Elizabeth Drazdowski.

The other three first half Tar Heel goals were scored by Elizabeth Stephens, Drazdowski and Melanie Brill. North Carolina added a goal in the 41st minute of action off a corner to make the final score 5-0.

Iowa was unable to score offensively. The Hawkeyes recorded six total shots. Senior co-captain Meghan Beamesderfer led the team with three shots.

The Hawkeyes used two in goal today. Sophomore Tori Garifo started in net, while freshman Kathleen McGraw saw her first game action in the second half.

The Hawkeyes return to action Friday when they travel to No. 17 Massachusetts. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. (CDT).
