Hawkeyes Head to Season Opener

THIS WEEK — The University of Iowa women’s golf team is competing at the Mary Fossum Invitational in East Lansing, MI, Sept. 12-13. Iowa will tee off at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Forest Akers on the West Golf Course . The 17 competing teams will play 36 holes Saturday and the final 18 Sunday. THE COMPETITION — Iowa will face 16 teams including Eastern Michigan, Ferris State, Grand Valley State, Indiana, James Madison, Kentucky, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Oakland, Ohio, Purdue, Toledo and Western Michigan.

LINEUP — The lineup for the Hawkeyes will be senior Alison Cavanaugh, juniors Laura Cilek and Brianna Coopman, and freshmen Kristi Cardwell and Gigi DiGrazia.

NEXT COMPETITION — The Hawkeyes will travel to Madison, WI to compete in the Lady Northern. The tournament will take place at the University Ridge Golf Course on September 27-28.

LAST SEASON — The Iowa women’s golf team finished its season at the Big Ten Championships. The 72-hole tournament, hosted by Purdue, took place April 24-26 in West Lafayette, IN. The Hawkeyes finished fifth behind three nationally ranked teams. Iowa’s fifth-place finish is the best the Hawkeyes have seen at the conference tournament since the 1995 Big Ten Championships where Iowa placed fourth.

Iowa competed in 10 tournaments this past year, placing in the top-ten in seven of the outings. The Hawkeyes also defeated Stetson University in a dual meet this spring. The team placed second at the Hawkeye Invitational, where everyone on the team recorded season bests. Iowa will tee up its 2009-10 season in September.
